The Amadou Diallo Foundation Will Give Scholarships
to Two CUNY Colleges
Bronx, NY Kadiatou Diallo, mother of
Amadou Diallo, will announce the establishment of an Amadou Diallo
Scholarship for Bronx Community College and Borough of Manhattan
Community College.
The announcement of this scholarship will take place in
the Rotunda of the Gould Memorial Library on Bronx Community Colleges
campus, located at University Avenue & West 181st Street, on Wednesday,
February 2, 2005. At the memorial event, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., Mrs.
Diallo and others will deliver remarks. According to the Amadou Diallo
Foundation, the scholarship will memorialize Mrs. Diallos son and
turn a searing personal tragedy into a positive message on the importance
of education.
The $30,000 in scholarships will be equally divided between
BCC and BMCC. In the first year, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to
each of five students of African, African-American, and Afro-Caribbean
descent at each school. Eligible applicants should have 3.0 or better
grade point average and should be business or liberal arts majors. The
current award will fund scholarships for three years.
Both BCC and BMCC are part of The City University of New
York (CUNY) Colleges. BMCC ranks #1 among community colleges nationwide
in awarding associate degrees to African-Americans. BCC is a designated
Hispanic and Minority Serving Institution (MSI).
I can empathize with the pain that Kadiatou Diallo
has gone through in the years since the incident. The scholarships Amadou
Diallos mother will declare on February 2nd will be a long term
reminder of her son and provide support to help worthy college students
pay some of their educational costs, said Bronx Community College
President Carolyn G. Williams.
BMCC President Antonio Pérez said, "Mrs. Diallo
has shown tremendous courage and strength by turning her loss and personal
tragedy into an opportunity to help others live a better life. We are
honored and grateful that she has chosen to enrich the lives of BMCC students
by creating a scholarship in memory of her late son, Amadou."
